fxpodcast #369: Shōgun with VFX Supervisor Michael Cliett

Shōgun is a historical drama series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. It is based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, which was previously adapted into a 1980 miniseries.

The cast includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido. Although it is an American series, the cast is mostly Japanese, and the majority of the dialogue is in the Japanese language.

Furthermore, as we discussed when we sat down for this episode with the Production VFX Supervisor Michael Cliett, – the entire series was shot in Canada. Thanks to the talents of the impressive VFX artists – the production is visually remarkable and applauded widely for its authenticity.

The first season premiered its first two episodes on February 27, 2024, on FX on Hulu and FX/Disney internationally, and it appears that not one but two more seasons are being planned based on the historical drama in cooperation with estate of James Clavell.

The VFX were provided by Important Looking Pirates, SSVFX, Goodbye Kansas Studios, Refuge VFX, Barnstorm VFX, Pixelloid Studios, and Render Imagination. Below are some of their making of reels.
